Ilja, Team Leader, Tallinn, Estonia

Ilja holds a BSc in Integrated Engineering from TalTech, Tallinn University of Technology. Before joining Comatec, he worked as a mechanical design engineer at a company focused on power electronics equipment. When he came across a job posting for Comatec, he saw it as an exciting opportunity. Ilja applied, and a few months later joined Comatec as a Design Engineer, where he has over the years grown into a Team Leader role.

As a Design Engineer, Ilja primarily focuses on Valmet projects, alongside contributing to various other tasks. Since becoming a Team Leader last year, his role has expanded to include also business-related responsibilities.

“In addition to my design work, I engage with current and potential clients, manage vendor relationships, handle invoicing, and contribute to recruitment efforts. My days are a mix of technical design, team coordination, and strategic business activities, ensuring both project success and team growth”, Ilja says.

My transition to a new role has also broadened my perspective, giving me valuable insights into business operations, sales, and team management. According to Ilja the most challenging part is planning the workload for the mid to long term in a fast-changing environment. The unpredictability of project timelines and emerging technologies makes it tough to map out tasks months or even years ahead. Balancing immediate deadlines with long-term development and project planning is sometimes demanding, but it’s also rewarding to grow and adapt while contributing to Comatec’s success in a fast-changing industry.
