The talents of the future are raised at Comatec
Our summer interns Jarkko, Veera, Jesse and Ville represent different fields of study and backgrounds, but they are united by a willingness to learn new things, develop their skills, and gain experience in work life.
A summer job at Comatec offers young experts the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies to real life customer projects, develop their technical skills and grow professionally as part of a professional and encouraging work community.
We interviewed a few of our summer employees about their work.
Jarkko – Trainee, Mechanical Engineering
Jarkko is studying mechanical engineering at Turku University of Applied Sciences, majoring in machine automation. His studies are in the final stretch and the intention is to graduate by the end of the year. Jarkko ended up working at Comatec through a work online seminar held at Turku University of Applied Sciences.
Jarkko works as a mechanical designer and his working days consist of 3D modeling with Siemens NX software. He designs various machine parts and structures, which are used to prepare technical manufacturing drawings for customers.
“The best thing about my job is definitely its versatility, as I get to work with varied and interesting tasks. The challenge increases using multiple different software. Even though I had a good basic knowledge of Siemens NX before I was employed by Comatec, the use of the program still requires a little practice”, Jarkko says.
Jarkko has been working at Comatec for three months now, and the company has proven to be a pleasant and supportive place to work.
Veera – Trainee, Sustainability
Veera is studying environmental engineering at the University of Tampere, and will start her fifth year of studies in the autumn. So, her studies also are in the final stages, and she is going to write a master’s thesis next year. Veera did her bachelor’s thesis on collecting data related to a company’s emissions calculation, and became interested in the idea of looking at companies’ emission calculations from a slightly different perspective.
“In the autumn and spring, I was busy applying for various jobs, and I received an interview invitation for two positions. One of these was Comatec, which I choose. I wasn’t familiar with Comatec as a company before, and I found this job by looking for certain positions”, Veera says.
Veera is a trainee in the sustainability team of Comatec’s expert services. The work is quite independent, but different challenges can always be reflected together with other team members.
“My duties consist of various customer projects, which include data collection, reading standards and various studies, customer meetings, producing reports and performing emission calculations with the SimaPro software.”
In her daily work, Veera has, for example, been able to calculate lifecycle emissions, prepare an environmental declaration (EPD) for the product, investigate the effects of the energy use of the product manufactured by the company and the energy used by the customer on the company’s Scope 3 emissions, and identified opportunities to reduce these emissions.
“The best thing about my job is the variety, the constant learning and the fact that I get to have a concrete positive impact on the operations of companies and, hopefully, also on the climate crisis. The most challenging part of the job is gathering the information needed and, also the flip side of continuous learning; for example, you need to be able to conduct surveys in industries with which you are not familiar yet. But here, too, you can get support from the rest of the team.“
“There is a good atmosphere at the Tampere office, and I have been well received in my team. I like that I get to think about things together with my colleagues. It’s also been nice that my closest teammates are young!”
Jesse – Trainee, Mechanical Engineering
Jesse has four years of mechanical engineering studies behind him at the University of Tampere. Jesse, who studies machine design and product development, works as a mechanical designer, making modifications to designs and technical drawings based on production feedback.
“The best thing about this job is that you get to learn important skills in real life in addition to the knowledge gained from your studies. The work assignments are anyway somewhat different from the theory you read in your studies”, Jesse says.
“At times, understanding large and complex entities has been a little challenging, especially when all the equipment to be designed is not yet familiar to me. There have also been slightly more unusual implementations, and this creates really challenging tasks. But at the same time, the challenge makes the work varied and more enjoyable.”
Jesse, who in his free time enjoys motorsport in the form of drifting, has enjoyed his time at Comatec.
“It’s been quite nice to work here. Co-workers have been really friendly, and you can get help whenever you ask.”
Ville – Junior Structural Analyst
Ville studied mechanical engineering at the University of Tampere, majoring in strength of materials and minoring in mechanical engineering. He graduated at the end of last year.
Ville ended up at Comatec through a job advertisement published on LinkedIn.
“I noticed an interesting job advertisement on social media, and the open position strongly corresponded to my own educational background. Due to the current employment situation, I was also open to applying for internships with the plan that I would get my foot in the door and get a permanent employment contract with the company in the future”, Ville says.
Ville is now part of Comatec’s calculation team, and his work consists of creating calculation models and preparing a report based on them. The calculation model is created in the FEM software, and the purpose of the calculation model is to study the behaviour of the structure and whether the designed structure meets the criteria related to durability and behaviour. The report describes the creation of the calculation model and the key results, among other things.
“The best thing about my job is finding solutions to various problems. Creating a calculation model is not the same every time, as each model has its own challenges.”
Based on three months of experience, Ville has a good impression of the company.
“The work is very flexible, and we can decide where and when to do the work within the framework of the project. I also like that attention is paid to well-being at work, for example, by organising staff well-being days. I could see Comatec as a workplace where you will enjoy yourself for several years. So far, I’ve been happy to wake up to work every morning.”
