Comatec grows from a Finnish engineering consultancy into an international partner

Finnish engineering and expert services company celebrating its 40th anniversary, provides comprehensive product development support under a one-stop-shop model.

In its early years, Comatec focused on material handling systems and design and expert services for Finnish industry. During the 1990s and 2000s, the company expanded internationally and broadened its operations to include electrical and automation design, project management and product development. At the same time, its customer base expanded across multiple industries.

Expertise in work machines, vehicles and intelligent mobility

One of Comatec’s strengths is the design and product development of mobile work machines, commercial vehicles and vehicles for the defence sector. Assignments range from forestry machines to mining equipment and earthmoving machinery. In commercial vehicles, the company has expertise in trucks and buses, as well as trams and trains. This strength is based on a deep understanding of the requirements of machine manufacturing, real-world operating conditions, and the rapidly advancing fields of electrification and automation.

Comatec also delivers demanding design and development projects for industry and the marine sector. It carries out projects for production facilities, workshops and shipbuilding applications, where technical precision and the integration of multiple systems are essential. Comatec excels in managing large technical entities, particularly in environments where schedules, safety and delivery reliability are critical.

“We are seeking growth particularly in shipbuilding. We specialise in ship electrical systems and piping design for engine rooms, the design of lifting equipment for heavy machinery, and industrial electrical equipment”, says Marko Pennanen, CEO of Comatec Industrial and Marine Oy.

He highlights Comatec’s high-level expertise in marine electrical power engineering: “Electrification is clearly visible in the shipbuilding industry. Hybrid and fully electric solutions are becoming more common in the drivetrains of many different types of vessels. Environmental values are strongly reflected in the marine industry.”

Comatec’s specialist expertise also covers process design, automation, electrification and the execution of investment projects for production and energy plants. At the beginning of 2025, four separate limited companies were brought together under this area of expertise, resulting in exceptionally strong capabilities. Comatec is known for its technology-independent approach and its ability to modernise production facilities and energy systems.

“Our dream project would be, for example, a power plant where we could utilise our specialist expertise and design the facility as a whole, including the pressure boiler, piping and automation, as well as conveyor belts and material handling systems”, says Janne Lammela, CEO of Comatec Process and Automation Oy.
