Paula, Engineering Manager, Turku, Finland

Paula, who studied mechanical engineering at Turku University of Applied Sciences, holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Having also worked abroad, Paula is what is known as a so-called returnee, as she has already previously worked with us.

“I worked at Comatec in 2011–2012. After that, I spent seven years abroad. When returning to Finland became part of my plans, I enquired about job opportunities at Comatec, but at that time there was no suitable position available. I had been working for around five years at a engineering office when I noticed that Comatec had a very interesting position open. I applied for the role and was selected,” Paula explains.

Today, Paula works at Comatec as an Engineering Manager. Her responsibilities include, among other things, sales related to the shipbuilding industry, recruitment, and the overall development of a new business model. She is also responsible for building a team and for guiding and supervising their work. Managerial duties take up part of her working time, but Paula also has technical responsibility in designated design projects related to her own field. This ensures she maintains a strong hands-on connection with design work as well.

“The best things about my job are the versatile nature of my role and the opportunity to influence the development of my own department and the related decisions. I also really appreciate our supportive work community; we have a great atmosphere and spirit!”

Challenges naturally arise in everyday work as well, and according to Paula, the most challenging aspect of developing a new unit is finding suitable clients and the right professionals and bringing them together at the right time. Paula interviews many potential candidates and also meets as many potential clients as possible in her day-to-day work to identify the best expertise for each specific need.

Paula describes Comatec as a flexible employer that also places importance on employee wellbeing, with a clear willingness to invest in training and wellbeing at work. Paula organises regular exercise-related and other activities for her team, fostering a sense of community.
